Injured Öncü battles until the very end

Monday, 5 September 2022

Deniz Öncü pushed through the pain barrier to claim another impressive fourth place at the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. The Red Bull KTM Tech3 ace surprised everyone by taking pole position, despite visibly being in discomfort having injured his right shoulder in training.

He got the holeshot but it was Izan Guevara (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) who made the early running when he hit the front on Lap 2. Guevara’s team-mate and championship leader at the start of the day, Sergio Garcia, was in the thick of the action – starting from a lowly 13th, he battled his way to eighth before going on to hit Öncü from behind. This dropped him to ninth before he washed out the front end of his GasGas as he tipped into Curva del Rio.

The Spaniard managed to re-mount and re-join the race some laps later after initially pitting after the crash, presumably in an effort to score points. However, he was black-flagged shortly after half-race distance due to ‘Irresponsible riding’ for interfering with a gaggle of riders vying for seventh position.

At the halfway point Deniz was down in seventh, almost two seconds off the lead and despite no doubt beginning to suffer from increasing shoulder pain, he rallied superbly and slowly but surely clawed his back up to the front four of Deniz Foggia (Leopard Racing), Guevara and the Red Bull KTM Ajo pairing of Daniel Holgado and Jaume Masia

.

And sure enough, the No.53 wasn’t done there as he launched a last lap attack up the inside of Guevara and Masia as they entered Curva Quercia (by this point Holgado had faded and was a few seconds adrift). He made the risky move stick but compromised his exit which allowed the two Spaniards to force their way back past on the run into Curva Tremonto.

This gave Foggia just enough breathing space to take his third win of the season. With Garcia not scoring,  Guevara’s third place put him in front of his team-mate in the championship standings (204 vs 193 points). Deniz is now fifth on 140 points.
