Öncü takes hard-fought fourth

Sunday, 21 August 2022

Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider Deniz Öncü just missed out on back-to-back podium finishes at the Red Bull Ring, but remains the only rider in the field to score points at every round. Öncü was once again one of the main protagonists in another Moto3™ thriller which saw Auyumu Sasaki (Sterilgarda Husqvarna Max) take his second victory of the season after serving a double long lap penalty.

Starting from third on the grid, Deniz made a good getaway and immediately established himself as part of the lead group, hitting the front on Lap 2.  However, an error under braking into the new chicane installed on the straight leading up to the Remus corner two laps later meant he had to stand the bike up to prevent running into the back of the rider in front.

Having straight-lined the chicane, the Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider had to concede track position to a handful of riders so as not to be deemed to have gained an advantage. This put him on the back foot, and it took him a few laps to claw his way back up to fourth.

By half-race distance, and having served his double long lap penalty in the early stages, Sasaki stormed through the field to take the lead. A lead he would not relinquish until the chequered flag

.
Deniz worked hard to cling onto the coattails of his ex Tech3 team-mate and Tatsuki Suzuki (Leopard Racing); with his taller frame, the Red Bull Ring’s long straights hurt the No.53 and into the closing stages of the race he became slightly detached from the leading Japanese duo.

Sensing his chance for podium glory, David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports) forced his way past Deniz on the final lap to take the last step on the rostrum.

The GASGAS Aspar pairing of Sergio Garcia and Izan Guevara sit atop of the championship standings with 193 and 188 points respectively, while Öncü sits in sixth tied with Jaume Masia (Red Bull KTM Ajo) on 127.
