Podium delight for Deniz Öncü

Sunday, 7 August 2022

Following a long summer break, the iconic Silverstone circuit provided the scene for a chaotic and breathless Moto3™ race which saw Red Bull KTM Tech 3 rider Deniz Öncü score his first podium of the season. The Turkish star continued his run of point-scoring finishes from every race this season as he took the final podium place, a mere 0.297s behind eventual winner Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing).

Öncü looked rejuvenated, showing strong pace in the practice and qualifying sessions. Indeed, he was in the thick of the action from the moment the lights went out; making a great start from sixth on the grid, he charged through the pack to the lead across the line at the end of the opening lap.

Nobody had the pace to make a break, so the lead changed hands many times throughout the race. Deniz led numerous times, notably in the closing stages. However, as the race entered its remaining few laps the action at the front became increasingly frantic with so many riders jostling for position in the lead group.

Things came to a head on Lap 14 when Ayumu Sasaki (Sterilgarda Husqvarna Max) got it all wrong under braking into the left-hand Turn 13 and rear-ended championship leader Sergio Garcia (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team). But there was still plenty of late drama to come as the riders started their final lap…

Ivan Ortala (Angulus MTA team) lost the front going off-line into Stowe corner, leaving Izan Guevara (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) nowhere to go. And then rookie sensation David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports) low-sided his KTM while in third with just a few seconds left of the race, which allowed the Deniz to pick up the pieces and take third.

With both GASGAS riders failing to finish the race, Garcia holds a narrow 3-point lead over teammate Guevara (182 to 179). Deniz sits in 5th with 114 points.
